Building Nette: Liz Connelly’s Journey to Curating a Community-Centered Boutique
Discover how Liz Connelly turned her lifelong dream into reality with Nette, a Charleston boutique blending style, community, and intentional curation.
Hello Founders,
In this todays’s edition of The Founders Society Substack, we’re thrilled to share our conversation with Liz Connelly, the founder of Nette, a women’s clothing, beauty, and lifestyle boutique in Charleston, South Carolina. Liz’s story is one of perseverance, creativity, and passion, as she built a brand that celebrates community and connection. From road-trip pop-ups to a beautifully curated storefront, Nette is a reflection of Liz’s commitment to making her dream a reality.
The Origin Story: From Retail Experience to Entrepreneurship
Liz’s journey began long before Nette’s doors opened. With years of experience in retail, including time at Nordstrom and local boutiques, she developed a deep understanding of the industry. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Liz decided it was time to take the leap and open her own store. The name Nette pays tribute to her grandmother Annette, a source of unwavering support throughout Liz’s entrepreneurial journey.
Curation and Vision: Setting Nette Apart
Nette is more than just a store—it’s a community-focused space that reflects Liz’s dedication to intentional curation. From attending multiple markets a year to building long-standing relationships with brands, Liz is able to bring in unique offerings that continues to set Nette apart from other Charleston boutiques. Rather than catering to tourists, she designed Nette to be a welcoming haven for locals, fostering a sense of belonging and style.
Selecting favorites from Nette is tough, but Hayley and Meg can't resist the versatile gingham dress for year-round wear (simply add a sweater!), this breezy dress in sea salt, and the stunning black bow bucket bag that adds a perfect pop to any occasion!
Overcoming Challenges: Lessons in Creativity and Leadership
Like any entrepreneurial journey, Liz’s path wasn’t without obstacles. Delays in securing the perfect retail space led her to get creative with pop-up events, helping her build awareness and connect with customers. Learning to hire the right team and grow as a leader has been an ongoing process, but Liz’s gratitude for the support she’s received keeps her grounded and focused on her vision.
Nette’s North Star: Confidence and Community
At the heart of Nette is Liz’s goal to create a space where customers feel inspired, confident, and connected. She encourages fellow entrepreneurs to embrace perseverance and not fear failure, viewing each challenge as an opportunity to learn. By staying true to her vision, Liz has attracted the right people and opportunities to grow Nette into a beloved community destination.
